Beginner reef stocking matrix
Use this matrix to keep stocking pace attached to tank maturity, aggression, bioload, and care difficulty.
Early livestock
Start with hardy, peaceful animals that do not depend on a mature pod population, high light, or perfect chemistry.
- Ocellaris clownfish, royal gramma, firefish, watchman goby, and simple cleanup crew choices.
- Soft corals such as mushrooms, zoanthids, and green star polyps after basic stability is proven.
- Avoid territorial fish as the first addition if the final community is not decided.
Late livestock
Delay animals that need mature food webs, strong lighting, stable alkalinity, or extra space.
- Mandarins, anemones, SPS, and large tangs are not early confidence tests.
- Add delicate animals after the tank has a stability history.
- Use the planner when one animal changes tank size, flow, light, or bioload.
