Decision rules
- Smaller water volumes move salinity fast; on a 20 gallon tank a missed top-off is a measurable swing within a day.
- Pair the primary float or optical sensor with a backup sensor or a timed run limit so one stuck sensor can't drain the reservoir into the display.
- Size the reservoir to several days of evaporation so weekends and short trips don't force a manual top-off.
- Mount sensors where flow won't false-trigger them and where you can clean them without tearing down the chamber.
Avoid these mismatches
- A single-sensor ATO with no backup cutoff on a small soft coral tank, where a stuck float means a salinity crash.
- A reservoir so small it empties between top-ups, which defeats the point of automating evaporation.
- Topping off with anything but fresh RO/DI — an ATO multiplies whatever is in the reservoir.
